Eddie Murphy will play Frank George Clinton’s Godfather – Deadline

Exclusive: Eddie Murphy is in preliminary discussions to play the role of George Clinton, the funk leader of Parliament. Murphy will also co-produce with John Davis and Katherine Davis through their Davis Entertainment banner. They are tying the knot with the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer and Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award winners and then they will set up the authors and purchase the project. Murphy has a three-picture deal with Amazon that came after the success of Coming 2 America. This is an emotional project for Murphy.

Clinton is widely regarded as the godfather of funk music, competing with James Brown and Sly Stone as the leading inventors of the genre. The film tells the story of the humble beginnings of an iconic musician in North Carolina in the 1940s, the formation of his groundbreaking band George Clinton and Parliament Funkdalek, and eventually the influence of music on hip-hop generation artists, including Tupac. Shakur, Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Ice Cube, Outcast and U-Tang Clan, among many others.

Murphy teamed up with Davis in the Netflix movie Dolemite is my name, Which earned him much acclaim for his role as Rudy Ray Moore, the star of the impromptu blackspatation film. He then followed the sequel to his 1988 comedy classic Coming 2 America. Murphy later began building on the Kenya Barris-directed Netflix comedy People, Where he co-starred with Jonah Hill. That will be followed with Beverly Hills Cop 4 This summer, when he repeats his role as Alex Foley. Murphy separately nominated Emmy for her long awaited return Live Saturday nightThe show that turned him on.

Clinton was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1997, along with 15 other members of the Funkdalek Parliament. In 2019, he and those members were awarded their Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award.
