Jury rewards $ 14 million for protesters injured in George Floyd protests

A federal jury has awarded ড 14 million in damages to 12 Denver protesters. The jury found that Denver police used excessive force against the protesters, violating their constitutional rights. During the 2020 protests in protest of the killing of George Floyd police in Minneapolis, protesters were hit with a bag of pepper and lead.

According to court documents, attorneys argued that the protesters’ aggressive response, and injuries, were a direct consequence of how the city failed to properly train and supervise police officers. One protester was placed under intensive care after his skull was broken and he suffered a brain haemorrhage.

A jury of two men and six women returned their verdicts after nearly four hours of deliberations. The verdict comes after three weeks of testimony and evidence that included video of the incident by police and protesters.

“Unfortunately, Denver Police Department officials and other law enforcement officials responded extensively to help the peaceful protesters face extreme destructive behavior from some of the protesters,” Denver City and County told CNN in a statement. “We acknowledge that something went wrong.”

A total of five Denver police officers were disciplined for their actions during the protests. And according to the department, another officer, who was new and still entering, was fired with the “Let’s start a riot” comment after posting a picture of others in strategic gear on social media.
