Sony’s Wayne Garvie: “We want to be the biggest drama studio in Britain –

Wayne Garvey, president of Sony Pictures Television International Productions, has expressed his desire to become Britain’s largest drama studio and push it into Europe, as he has spoken publicly for the first time with Bad Wolf CEO Jane Trantar.

Sony now owns it His Dark Materials Including producer The crown Indy Left Bank and Sex education Eleven and Garvey detailed his ambitions in a keynote address on Mip TV this afternoon.

He said that the Power House drama “complements” the trio of Indies and gives a lot of scale to Sony.

“If you make me a book for a TV show, I’ll know right away who in the Indies is going to pay for it,” he explained. “They are very complementary.”

Labels for all the dramas have been acquired over the past decade, and Garvey is now turning his attention to Europe, as streamers earn more commissions from regions, including France, Germany and Spain.

Garvey and Trenter unveil Bad Wolf’s first drama project after Sony deal, an adaptation of Bernard Cornwell WorldLord Chronicles From Diseased blind Director Auto Bathurst, which is not yet connected to any network.

The pair backed a string of top production executives who argued in last month’s series Mania that major geniuses were opting for super-indie talent deals over ‘Golden Handcuff’-style streamer deals.

“Those [streamer] Contracts feel limited and do not allow talent to work with the best producers or directors, “said Garvey. “They pay good money but don’t necessarily give creative freedom.”

Trenter says the genius still enjoys the thrill of putting together a show before taking it to the network, which does not approve of these deals.

“Every time a writer sits in front of a computer screen with a blank page, they line themselves up and sometimes that fear drives us creatively to be our own best,” he added.
