Sony Pictures Classics announced today that its golf film The Phantom of the Open, starring Academy Award winner Mark Rylans, Academy Award nominee Sally Hawkins and BAFTA Award nominee Rice Iffans, will open in New York and Los Angeles on June 3, with a wide release following. Extra markets throughout the week.
The film, directed by Craig Roberts, will star opposite IFC Films, starring Micah Monroe, a crime thriller starring Frank and Penelope from BlueFox Entertainment. .
The Phantom of the Open is based on the book of the same name by Simon Farnby and Scott Murray. It follows Maurice Fleetcroft (Reliance), a dreamer and relentless optimist who qualified for the 1976 British Open golf championship and later shot in the worst round in Open history, becoming a protagonist in the process. It had its world premiere last year at the 65th BFI London Film Festival.
Farnabi adapted the screenplay for the film, which is a co-production between Water and Power Productions and Baby Cow Productions and produced by Kate Glover, Nicola Martin and Tom Miller. Alison Thompson and Mark Gooder of Cornerstone Films, Peter Touch and Crystal Conan of Ingenious Media, Mary Burke for BFI and Rose Garnet and Emma Duffy of BBC Film, as well as Christine Langan and James Swarbrik executives. The film was produced by BFI with funding from National Lottery, BBC Film, BFI and Ingenious Media.
